Halloween Safe Snacking Tips from the Beverly Hills Orthodontist, Dr. Nikaeen

Nov 12, 2009

BEVERLY HILLS, CA -- Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen, an orthodontist who treats patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and Santa Monica, is suggesting some safe alternatives to candies that can be harmful to braces during the Halloween season.

Halloween tends to signal an rise in visits to the orthodontist when sticky, chewy candies bend wires or break other appliances in children who wear braces, said,  the Beverly Hills Orthodontist, Nikaeen.

"There are lots of candies that children can eat," she said. "But there are several types that should be avoided."

For example, chewy candies with caramel and gummy candies are not good for braces wearers because they can stick to appliances and even damage them. Caramel apples also are off limits. Chocolate candies are a safer option.

"I recommend to my young patients that they eat candies that won't harm their appliances," said Nikaeen. "But I also remind them that it is important to brush their teeth after eating these candies, because the sugars in the candies can lead to tooth decay."

invialign provider Dr. Nikaeen also is sharing a recipe for a braces-friendly snack that children can make at home with their parents. This recipe is courtesy of "The Braces Cookbook: Recipes You and Your Orthodontist Will Love" by Pamela and Brenda Waterman. www.bracescookbook.com
