Le Serpent Rouge - An Evening of Beguiling Dance and Strangely Familiar Music

Apr 25, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA -- If Queen Victoria, Edward Gorey, Django Reinhardt and Little Egypt got together for a tea party, who would entertain them?

The Indigo Belly Dance and Miles Copeland bring you Le Serpent Rouge. Vintage cabaret meets vagabond elegance in a strange brew of bellydance and Ragtime, Vaudevillian, Mid-Eastern and Gypsy music. Sometimes enchanting, sometimes macabre, often raucous, but always delightful, these performers breathe new life into the movement and spectacle of a bygone era in this knockdown revue.

Rachel Brice is known for merging yoga and bellydance into her unique Tribal Fusion snake-like style.   In 2003 she was discovered by rock mogul, Miles Copeland, and began touring internationally with his company, the Bellydance Superstars. That same year, Rachel founded The Indigo Belly Dance Company. 2007 marks The Indigo's first full-length touring show, Le Serpent Rouge, presented by Miles Copeland.   Her credits include her instructional DVD, Tribal Fusion Belly Dance: Yoga Isolations and Drills, among others.

Mardi Love is currently working and performing with The Indigo and the Bellydance Superstars internationally.  She is a major influence on the costuming and choreographic style of The Indigo. Mardi can be seen in Bellydance Superstars: Live at the Folies Bergeres

An innovative dancer, Zoe Jakes has her own unique take on Tribal Bellydance.  Her interpretation has been enhanced through the study of other dance forms, including Classical North Indian Kathak, which she studied at the esteemed school of Chitresh Das.  Currently she tours with the Bellydance Superstars and the Indigo, and also performs with the group Arabesque with Liz Strong.

The Inkwell Rhythm Makers are Ragtime Kit (steel guitar/lead vocals), Washrag Joe (washtub bass/banjo) and Washboard Willis (washboard). Kit and Joe have been playing music together for years.
The Inkwell Rhythm Makers are not a jug band, but they do play "jug band" music on top of 20's & 30's jazz, ragtime, novelty, string band music, and country blues along with some original tunes in the same vein.
