Going for the Gold - New books by Forrest Breyfogle Submitted for Shingo Prize

Sep 26, 2008

AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Two of three books in a new series by Forrest Breyfogle, 2005 ASQ Crosby Medalist, prolific author, and management systems guru, have been submitted to the Shingo Prize Board of Examiners for evaluation. Deemed "the Nobel Prize of manufacturing" by Business Week, the Shingo Prize program establishes standards for world-class excellence in manufacturing. Established in 1988, it is named for Japanese industrial engineer Shigeo Shingo, an expert in improving manufacturing processes. Shingo Prizes will be awarded in early 2009.

The two Breyfogle books, Integrated Enterprise Excellence Volume II-Business Deployment and Integrated Enterprise Excellence Volume III-Improvement Project Execution, are the implementation handbooks for the newly documented IEE system. IEE integrates the best practices of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma techniques to attain lasting improvements at the highest level of enterprise management, in addition to the focused improvements in manufacturing and business processes at the operational level which are at the core of the Lean manufacturing concept. Volume 1 of the series compares IEE to other improvement systems.

According to Breyfogle, CEO of Smarter Solutions, Inc., "IEE Volume 2 contains a detailed roadmap for achieving enterprise level integration and synchronization of improvements by using the Lean Six Sigma DMAIC roadmap (Define-Measure Analyze-Improve-Control) structure both at the enterprise level (E-DMAIC), and at the operational project level (P-DMAIC). IEE also aligns metrics at the enterprise and operational levels, defining what to measure, how to measure it, and how communicate the relationship between business performance metrics and operational decisions clear down to the operators."

Volume 3 of the Integrated Enterprise Excellence series further guides practitioners and leaders through the use of tools for analyses and improvements at both enterprise and project levels, serving as the day-to-day reference for project execution and enterprise improvement. It extensively documents tools used in the enterprise process or project execution roadmap steps, including drill downs, check sheets, and numerous reference tables.

An early adapter, Oracle Packaging of Winston Salem, NC, reports attainment of a 30% increase in manufacturing throughput, a 50% reduction in Work In Progress (WIP), reduced lead time, and a 5% reduction in raw material orders, all attributable to IEE.
