How Custom Furniture Makers Create Furniture Plans Based On Current Trends

Aug 17, 2011

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA -- Ana White, a leader in the DIY carpentry industry, breaks down the process of taking furniture trends and transforming them into step-by-step projects.

White is a carpentry blogger who shares free, step-by-step, illustrated project plans on her website http://www.ana-white.com. Many plans are inspired by designer furniture that retails for hundreds to thousands of dollars. Instead of paying retail prices, White takes the idea, makes a furniture plan and builds her own furniture.
"The question I get asked the most is how I design my plans," says White, who has plans on her site to make a storage table or bench plans and much more.

White uses Google SketchUp, a software tool that allows users to create, modify and share 3D models using a tool-set and intelligent drawing system. The free software is available for download on Windows and Mac.
"Figuring out the fundamentals of SketchUp to create simple furniture plans can be done in a relatively short amount of time," she says. "The community section of my website has forums where members share tips and offer advice on woodworking products."

This is her process for taking an idea and making it a reality:
• Get inspiration by browsing furniture trends.
• Break the piece down into the raw materials.
• Create a detailed plan: exact dimensions, materials, cuts and assembly process.
• Collect materials and tools.
• Begin building.
• Create Google SketchUp plan and submit to site.

"What works for me is to draw the furniture plans exactly how I would build the actual piece of furniture," White says.

She has a 16-step tutorial that shows how to create Google SketchUp plans: http://ana-white.com/2011/03/how-do-i-design-my-own-plans-google-sketchup. Members submit original plans and photos of the projects, and other custom furniture makers add comments and advice. The brag blog is for pictures of completed projects whether they are original or built from one of the thousands available on the site.
