Central Virginia Women-Owned Businesses Flourish Finding Downtown Retail Success

FARMVILLE, VA -- Each woman, a graduate of Longwood University and long-time resident of Tidewater, Virginia, exemplifies the wealth of opportunity that abounds within the community. All four entrepreneurs share strikingly similar backgrounds, meeting and marrying in the area, later settling into Farmville and opening their own retail shop downtown.

The first, Sandy Henderson, grew up in Portsmouth, graduating from Churchland High School in 1971 and Longwood University in 1975. Since 1987, she's owned and operated the high-end carpeting and custom rug fabrication shop, Rug Rats.

Katie Carmichael graduated from Longwood University in 2003 and Cape Henry Collegiate High School of Virginia Beach in 1993. Two years ago, she opened The Dressing Room, a contemporary boutique catering to chic, trendy female clientele.

Caryn Kayton, a 1979 Longwood graduate and alumni of Hampton's Kecoughtan High School, has owned and operated Caryns Bridals since 1982. Caryns Bridals has quickly become one of the most popular local destination for those seeking fine designer wedding gowns, prom and other formal attire.

Finally, Anice Schuler is a 1963 Longwood graduate and alumni of Norfolk's Granby High School's historic Lost Class of 1959, which was closed during Brown vs. Board of Education integration. Anice owned and managed The Fashion Post between 1982 to 2003, recognized for its timeless, classic women's attire.
