The Black Hill Ride and the Lakota Horse Games

Sep 19, 2011

RAPID CITY, SD -- On September the 18th a group of warrior horsemen of the Lakota Nation, lead by Bryan Deans will travel for the first time since 1835 on horseback up the Black Hills to gather at Bear Butt where they will celebrate the Lakota Horse Games which are a variety of bareback horse races they used to perform back in the old days.

The races are organised by Bryan Deans and Bamm Brewer from the Pine Ridge Reservation, supported by Roberto Pless and Edilberto Restino from the International Bareback Organisation

The Black Hill ride is a 150 mile scout ride, says Bryan Deans, which will follow the Centennial trail; one of the original emigration routes of the Lakota People.

We feel that the Black Hill Ride and the Lakota Horse Games are an effective tool to awaken the spirit of our people and to remind us of our powers through which we are able to contribute to the tasks humanity is facing in the 21stcentury.

This is a new project still in its infancy, supported by our elders and blessed by our holy men.

The two different aspects of the event, the Black Hill Ride represents our ability of endurance and fortitude while the races are a feat of courage, discipline and willpower, Bamm Brewer exclaims.

This is the first time the impulse is carried forward to make the Black Hill Ride and the Lakota Horse Games an annual event in which eventually all Nations and all Peoples are invited to participate and compete, says Bryan Deans.
