LONDON, UK -- PlayPokerOnline.com recently reported that at a time when the US government is taking action against the poker industry in the country, a few of its states are doing the contrary. Two states, Nevada and Iowa are making a move for online poker legislations. The Iowa State Senate has asked the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to study online poker and its impact on players.
Through this study, the state will look at the various aspects of the online poker world that raise concerns among the legislators. The study will also analyze the impact of playing unregulated poker online and what accounts for responsible gambling. In addition, the study will also look into regulatory recommendations and consumer protection policy suggestions that can be made in relation to online poker.
In the Iowa State Senate the study received a 38-12 vote to study all these aspects. The bill will now be sent to the House for consideration. In case the House passes it, the study will have to be wrapped up by the 1st of December this year.
Most states in the US, like California, Florida and New Jersey, argue for the formation of law for online poker. A spokesperson for PlayPokerOnline.com mentioned, "Poker players who want the law passed are arguing that the online poker industry in itself can bring in several millions of dollars if not more, to the government. They feel that the law will also serve to regulate online poker and other forms of online gambling in the country so and this way players will know what responsible gambling is."
He said that the opposing side believed that expanding the online poker industry will have a negative impact on the market. "States like Iowa having 14 casinos approved by the state and 6 casinos on the Indian reservation. And they believe that they stand to lose players to online poker if the legislations come through. However, this may not be the case, as the poker player pool online and in land based casinos are essentially different."
In Nevada, a bill -AB 258 - related to the creation of a gaming structure that is taxed and regulated, recently received votes from its committee. Nevertheless, this was following the inclusion of several changes to the bill. One such is the development of an intrastate poker framework in place of the initially proposed interstate or worldwide one. This alteration was made based on the Governor's concern that there is a possibility of a global operation for poker would clash against Federal Law. The Nevada General Assembly will next debate on the bill even though the vote for it is yet to be determined.
On the one hand, states are pushing the government to take pro-poker steps, while on the other hand, companies that were initially involved in the industry are withdrawing from it. PlayPokerOnline.com reports that one such recent incident is that of Fertitta Interactive ending agreements with Full Tilt Poker. On a similar note, Wynn Resorts has stepped back from entering the online poker world by terminating its agreement with Poker Stars.
