Craigslist Improperly Treats Non-Profit Job Postings As Pyramid Schemes

Jul 16, 2008

ATLANTA, GEORGIA -- Anti-Victim.Org, a Georgia non-profit corporation promoting simple ways women can take control of their personal security in metropolitan areas, can no longer post job ads on Craigslist because it offers part-time positions to educate and recruit members in its community service organization.

Anti-Victim.Org placed its job postings for Local Organizers and Discussion Leaders in the Atlanta non-profit jobs category. Although there are no up front or recurring fees required for the job positions, the ads have apparently triggered a policy violation associated with multi-level marketing programs and pyramid schemes because the jobs "require recruitment of other members."

"This has completely shut down our ability to build the organization at a grass roots level" said Michelle Highsmith, the organization's Co-Founder. "We had counted on the community service nature of Craigslist to help us reach out and help women in metropolitan areas. We never considered the possibility that advertising job opportunities primarily for women to help us build a grass roots organization would be a restricted activity by its very nature."

Anti-Victim.Org received no warnings or notices from Craigslist about its ads and all e-mail requests for assistance have had no response. The job ads for the organization were physically accepted and confirmed by Craigslist but never appeared on their website. The action by Craigslist comes at the same time the company is shifting its policies toward charging $25.00 for jobs ads in more cities, including Atlanta.

"Members are a legally recognized term for participants in a non-profit organization. You must define whether or not the organization is going to have members on your corporate application with the State," continued Highsmith. "How can recruiting members to participate in a non-profit community service effort be something that Craigslist's founders and operators want to prohibit?"

Craiglist's policy for prohibited job postings are available at  http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/faq-job#prohibitedjobs.

Anti-Victim.Org, Inc. is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia and produces the My Security Sense community education program. The organization's primary goal is to help women develop and enhance their sense of personal security by offering awareness education and facilitating discussions in living rooms, work places, libraries, college dormitories, sororities, civic clubs, and other group meetings in local communities.
