Sep 08, 2008

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA -- Six lawyers from McCandlish & Lillard, a law firm in Fairfax, Virginia, have been recognized by Virginia SuperLawyers magazine among Virginia's top attorneys in 2008.

Virginia SuperLawyers determines who is to be included as a "SuperLawyer" by surveying other attorneys practicing in the Commonwealth. Most of the firm's attorneys named as a result of this year's survey have been honored previously.

W. McCauley Arnold, a principal of the firm, was named a SuperLawyer in the category of Construction Litigation. His practice involves the defense and collection of substantial construction related claims in both private and government building projects. He has represented landowners and developers before county supervisors, planning commissions and Boards of Zoning appeals in several Virginia jurisdictions.

Arnold is one of the first attorneys in Virginia to receive his certification in Civil Trial Advocacy from the Na-tional Board of Trial Advocacy. He has also taken the necessary courses and examinations to qualify as a Certified Financial Planner, which has been useful in his work as an estate planner. Arnold is the author of several articles and booklets on Construction law and Collection Law and is listed in Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in Washington. Arnold has been an Arbitrator for the Construction Panel of the American Arbitration Association and is a Member of the Construction Law Forum of the American Bar Association.

Gary W. Brown, a principal and past Chairman of the Board of McCandlish & Lillard, was named a Super-Lawyer in the category of Alternate Dispute Resolution. His areas of concentration include medical malprac-tice, legal malpractice, product liability and employment discrimination. He is an experienced arbitrator and mediator. Brown is a former adjunct professor at both the Georgetown University Law Center and Medical Center and a past President of the District of Columbia Defense Lawyers Association, which chose him as Lawyer of the Year in 1996. Also, Brown was named this year as one of the Best Lawyers in America and has been included among the "Legal Elite" attorneys named annually by Virginia Business magazine several times.

R. Peyton Mahaffey, a principal and President of the firm, has been named a SuperLawyer once again in the category of Civil Litigation. He has broad experience as a trial lawyer and lead counsel in state and federal cases involving business, corporate and commercial matters, as well as arbitration and mediation. He has been the principal attorney on a number of reported state and federal decisions. Mahaffey has been elected to the "Legal Elite" since its inception in 2000, having been named to the "Legal Elite" by Virginia Business Magazine from 2000 - 2008, to Washingtonian Magazine's list of "Top Attorneys" in the Washington Metro-politan Area in 2004, and to the "SuperLawyers" list in Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area since and including 2006.

Lawrence J. McClafferty, a principal in the firm's Leesburg Office and member of the firm's Executive Com-mittee, was named a SuperLawyer in the category of Rising Stars. McClafferty, who just completed his term as President of the Loudoun County (VA) Bar Association, concentrates his practice in the area of civil litiga-tion, particularly with respect to business torts, commercial disputes and community associations. Virginia Business magazine has also listed him among Virginia's "Legal Elite" for three consecutive years.

Douglas J. Sanderson, a principal with the firm, was recognized as a SuperLawyer in the area of Family Law. Sanderson counsels and represents people who need legal assistance with such matters as pre-nuptial agreements, property and separation agreements, divorces, child custody and visitation, equitable distribution and support. He also practices business and real estate law. Sanderson has been recognized among Virginia Business' Legal Elite in every year since the inception of the list, except 2001. He served as President of Legal Services of Northern Virginia from 1993 to 1996 and currently serves as pro bono legal counsel to the Arts Council of Fairfax County, Inc.

Randolph A. Sutliff, a senior counsel to and former President of McCandlish & Lillard, was named a Super-Lawyer in the category of Business Law. He has concentrated on business law, with an emphasis on corpo-rate and real estate matters. Currently, he works part time at the firm, dividing his practice between the firm's Fairfax and Leesburg offices. He also works part time as General Counsel to the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, a not-for-profit educational foundation that also owns the Moorefield Station mixed-use commu-nity in Loudoun County. Sutliff has served as pro bono General Counsel for the National Capital Area Council Boy Scouts of America and as the President of the Dulles Area Transportation Association.
