HUNTINGTON, NY -- Protect your eyes: there's a new thief in town. Nearly seventy million people worldwide are the victims of glaucoma. Most alarming is that more than half of those people are unaware they even have the disease, says Dr. Paul Krawitz, a glaucoma and cataract specialist on Long Island and founder of Vitamin Science Inc.
March 6, "World Glaucoma Day", had eye doctors urging people to get screened for glaucoma. Recently, the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London developed computer software that works to notice glaucoma signs earlier than typical glaucoma tests. In the BBC News article "Test to Spot Early Glaucoma Signs", Professor Peng Tee Khaw, an ophthalmologist at the London hospital, feels that the test, called the Moorfields Motion Detection Test (MDT) can dramatically help patients.
"By the time people come to us they have often lost a lot of their sight and the damage is permanent. If we could pick these people up at an earlier stage it would make a tremendous difference to their lives," says Khaw.
The test is comprised of a white spot in the middle of a gray screen with white lines. Each time a line moves, the viewer presses the computer mouse. The goal of the research team is to one day put the software directly on the Internet for all to access.
Professor Vis Viswanathan, one of the developers of the test, feels that traditional glaucoma tests often fail to adequately diagnose glaucoma.
"A better test would be based on the ability to perceive motion and that is how this test came about," says Viswanathan, in the "Test to Spot Early Glaucoma Signs" article.
