UK, DORSET -- The 141st running of the Belmont Stakes takes place this Saturday evening at Belmont Park, New York with Kentucky Derby winner, Mine That Bird odds on favourite to win in the Belmont Stakes Betting. Should he do so he will at least complete two of the three legs of the coveted US Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Horse Racing, better known simply as the Triple Crown. Mine That Bird won the first leg, The Kentucky Derby at the beginning of May.
Sadly racing fans will need to continue their wait for another Triple Crown winner, a wait that has been in progress since 1978 when the great Affirmed won with jockey, Steve Cauthen on board.
Unluckily for Mine That Bird he found the flying filly, Rachel Alexandra too good for him in the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, last month, but still managed to get within half a length of her. She of course will not be running in the Belmont, but Mine That Bird should he win will at least join an elite band of horses who have won two of the legs and been second in the other.
The Triple crown however is still a prospect for jockey, Calvin Borel, he was on board both, Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby and switched to Rachel Alexandra to win the Preakness, now having switched back to Mine That Bird for the Belmont he can earn himself a place in history.
Others in with a chance in the Belmont Stakes Form are Dunkirk, who has been tearing up the gallops with some impressive runs and Charitable Man who has been specifically trained for this race known also as "the run for the carnations". They are second and third in the betting respectively.
The Belmont Stakes is raced over the 1½ miles oval dirt circuit of Belmont Park. It is usually won as much by the jockey as it is the horse, due to the essential requirement to judge pace and position of a race distance not too common in American racing. It is race with a reputation of producing some of the most fantastic finishes in racing anywhere in the world.
