MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- With the launch of a new instructional video learning site – Video is not just for entertainment anymore. The days of trying to get into group golf lessons may be over according to Eric Chiles a golf pro, CEO and co-founder of a video sharing site called Lessonbites.com. Unlike many social networking sites popping up on the internet today based primarily on self created entertainment content, Mr. Chiles decided to develop a new model. Modeled after instructor videos, Lessonbites.com allows professional instructors like Chiles to post educational content on the web and get paid for it on a paid fee per video. By allowing those interested in learning a specific activity to download a lesson or "lesson bite" at a minimal cost, Mr. Chiles is hoping to create a marketplace in where instructors and students can both benefit from the explosion of social networking and video content on the web.
"I was searching for a way to teach students who couldn't take my class but still wanted to get lessons from me" says Chiles. "That spurred the idea of making training videos and distributing them via the web for a low cost fee." Working with a team of developers, Chiles created a video sharing platform similar to the likes of video sharing sites YouTube, Revver, and Blip.tv. What sets Lessonbites.com apart from the pack is the unique educational content with the added shopping cart and purchasing process for buying lesson clips. "The revenue model for the instructors is very generous and we've decided to keep the cost for purchasing a lesson bite very low" says Chiles. Instructional downloads cost as little as the price of a downloaded song.
"This business model will change the way instructors market themselves" says Chiles, whose private golf lessons go for $100 an hour and now a student can buy a video clip of that same lesson for 99 cents. "Professional instructors have been leveraging video for years with training videos and CD's but most without a strong distribution channel. With LessonBites.com, we hope to make lessons affordable to everyone while giving instructors greater reach and better distribution." Posting an instructional video to the site costs instructors only $9.99.
"There are several video sharing/revenue producing sites out there and more are popping up on a daily basis" says Chase Grover, an Interactive Strategist with Carlson Marketing Worldwide. "What's interesting about Lessonbites.com is it's the first of its kind to strictly focus on educational content. With so many of today's sites like Revver, Metacafe, Vume.com and Blip.TV focusing on revenue share for entertainment content, it will be interesting to watch if LessonBites.com can fill a real niche in the marketplace for educational video content."
Just launched in Beta form in May, Lessonbites.com is allowing instructors to upload videos for a short time for free in order to build more robust content departments. Instructional videos the site will host include content from sports to automotive and everything in between.
Unlike some video sites, LessonBites doesn't allow users to download lessons to their hard drive but instead allows them to store the video on their own training video page, thus reducing the risk of pirating. The site also offers a unique rating system where users can rate their favorite video content and favorite instructors.
The site is still in Beta but already offers users a clean interface to not only search and purchase instructional videos but also for instructors to load content.
