Saving The Planet, One Vibrator At A Time

Sep 19, 2007
"HealthyandActive.com advises consumers to be cautious when choosing vibrators that contain phthalates, possibly toxic chemicals. Vibratex, manufacturer of the popular Jack Rabbit vibrators, has introduced VixSkin, a phthalates-free alternative."

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA -- Want to do your part to save planet Earth? Buy a vibrator. Consumers are going green this fall by driving hybrid cars, noshing on organic treats, replacing ordinary lightbulbs with incandescent bulbs, and using new phthalates-free vibrators.

What are phthalates and what do they have to do with sex toys? According to Phthalates.com, phthalates are a family of organic chemicals that are commonly used to make hard plastic more flexible, such as in vibrators. Environmentalists are calling for extensive testing to discover whether phthalates produce adverse effects on the environment. Many already believe that they can release harmful toxins, and due to the invasive nature of vibrators, phthalates may pose a threat to humans as well.

In the article "Naughty By Nature" by Emily Gertz, Commonweal health advocate David Baltz explains the dangers of phthalates.

"In addition, [phthalates are] lipophilic, meaning they are drawn to fat. If they come into contact with solutions or substances that have lipid content, the fat could actually help draw the phthalates out of the plastic."

In 2000, Hans Ulrich Krieg, a German chemist, studied the chemicals found in European sex toys. He discovered that diethylhexyl phthalates seeped out of some of the sex toys. In Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Marketplace, Krieg describes his reaction to the findings.

"We were really shocked. I have been doing this analysis of consumer goods for more than 10 years and I've never seen such high results."

Over one million vibrators are purchased in the United States each year. Krieg urges vibrator users to be cautious when selecting their favorite new sex toy.

"I think consumers must be concerned with toys of this kind."

Don't throw out those vibrators just yet. Vibratex, manufacturer of the popular Jack Rabbit vibrators, has an eco-friendly solution that'll leave consumers craving for more of its intense features. Vibratex recently substituted phthalates in their sex toys with VixSkin, a silicone material. VixSkin is not porous, so no bacteria builds up on the vibrator, and is soft and flexible to give vibrator users a realistic, moan-inducing experience. Vibratex is committed to providing customers with safe, high quality vibrators designed to maximize their pleasure.

Vibratex's Jack Rabbit Vibrator was named Playboy's Best Vibrator and has been featured on HBO's "Sex and the City".
